Welcome Captains!

Professor Frank Ainger is the Club's new Captain following last week's AGM. 

Frank will be known to many for his work in the Senior Section of our club. In his working life, Frank was a Professor of Materials Science at Pennsylvamia State University. (not far from our rivals for the Atlantic Cup) 

Denise Brady will be the new Ladies section Captain following their AGM on 18th November.



Frost damage

 

With frost predicted this week here are some key points from the clubs course manager on Frosty ground conditions 

- Frost is basically frozen dew crystallizing on the grass making it hard and brittle. The grass blade is actually 90 percent water, therefore it also freezes. 

- Walking on frosty covered grass causes the plant to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to function normally. 

- When damaged, the putting surface weakens and becomes more susceptible to disease and weeds. 

- One fourball can leave several hundred footprints on each green, causing extensive damage. 

- A short delay/closure while frost melts or frozen soil thaws will preserve the quality of the greens and prevent needless repairs. 

- Due to the potential root shear problems, play on a part thawed surface can be devastating. 

- Part thawed surfaces are also susceptible to compaction and increased footprinting. 

For the reasons stated, a winter course closure policy involves three options that can be employed by the greenstaff. These are as follows: 

- Light frost present but unlikely to cause any damage- full course open 
- Heavy frost/frozen ground present deemed possible to cause damage- course open, frost holes employed 
- Frost/frozen ground/snow present to a degree whereby personal injury may occur-course closed until such time as a change in conditions is apparent that determines that it is considered safe to play the course

Paul progresses 

Paul Broadhurst, representing Northamptonshire County GC shot a final round 69 to win Stage One of Qualifying for the Champions Tour last week in Florida. 

Paul plays this week with club member Alan Kennedy in a Pro Am in Arizona before moving on to final qualifying the following week.

I recently saw Member Chris Fountain who was literally walking with more spring in his step. Chris has drop foot but has just been fitted with a brace. I asked him to email me the details below...Not sure about the shoes though Chris.

Hi Tim - I have footdrop in my right foot which was caused by severe sciatica / and post op a few years ago. Here is the link to the Richie Brace which I have just taken delivery of and so far so good - its aim is to make me walk heel to toe with my right foot. I have used Nicola Blower, Podiatrist at http://walkrite.co.uk/ who operates from http://www.thecountyclinic.co.uk/ on Fridays. 

She carried out footscans and then ordered the Richie Brace bespokely for me.
