Seniors Report - Dennis Walker

Life with the seniors certainly has its ups and downs this season! A recent series of matches since our last report has seen us win well away and then lose very heavily both home and away.

First of all however we have to congratulate Nigel Kay on his hole in one at the 17th during the Match at the Leicestershire. Nigel has sent a detailed account of the way the hole was played by him but it would take up too much space in this newsletter! Congratulations once again!

That match at The Leicestershire saw a sterling performance away from home and resulted in our first away win of the season. The score being 4.5 to 1.5. Ian Kennedy led the team for the first time this season and obviously rallied the troops well.

The return match followed in short order a week later and it seems our laurels could not stand the weight as we went down 3.5 to 2.5. Due to circumstances we were one man short on the day and this meant Paul Osborne had to play a pair on his own. His valiant effort which gave him the lead after 9 holes fell short in the end.

We then visited Copt Heath for the first time ever in the return fixture following our inaugeral match earlier in the month. They were obviously smarting after the defeated inflicted on them in that match and gave us an absolute hammering 7 to 1.

Their course was in magnificent condition the weather was grand and we have no excuses. There were some very heavy defeats in that match and it did show us that local knowledge is very important. Certainly with 96 bunkers to contend with and an element of target golf, which we are not that used to at Brampton, we struggled.

Course news

The two ball times have been cancelled throughout the whole of the week as the greens are being hollow-cored and scarified, so it is likely you will encounter a temporary green at some point during your game.

And a reminder to everyone there will be a number of course closures throughout August on the dates listed below, some of which are as you know prestigious events and we thank you for your patience:

14th August To be confirmed for the PGA Captain Pro Challenge
17th August Until 3pm (to be confirmed) for the Junior Open
22nd August Until 3pm for the Mens' Open playing for the Colin Green Trophy

The greenstaff started to hollow core the greens on Monday after an initial course cut. They will attempt to get as many greens cored behind the seniors as possible. As well as the 18th and two putting lawns.

Tuesday - hopefully complete the hollow coring and will have made a good start on the Graden work. Wednesday - continue to Graden. This will more than likely continue into the remainder of the week.

Temporary greens will be kept as minimal as possible. We will drop back onto mowing the course as bodies are freed up during the week.
