Captain Hits first shot

7.30 am Club Captain Chris Winters hit the first shot after lock down. It was also the first shot off the summer course keeping up a long tradition. I can also report his shot went straight down the middle

Social distancing in action

Playing with Brian O'Connel the captain shows social distancing. This is so important if we are to keep our course open.

Please DON’T arrive at the club earlier than 10-15 minutes prior to your tee time.

Here are some Golf reopening dos and don’ts:

Pre-round

+ DO book your tee time online, or over the phone. Please be mindful a lot of members will be phoning at the same time and we will be juggling a lot of jobs in the first week.

– DON’T forget to get changed into your golf attire at home and put your shoes on in the car or car park. Locker rooms are open for toilets and washbasins only.

+ DO eat before you get to the club – the kitchen will not be open to make you a sandwich or coffee.

– DON’T arrive at the club earlier than 10-15 minutes prior to your tee time.

+ DO wait your turn to go on the putting green in front of the clubhouse – those next on the tee have priority.

During the round

+ DO stay two metres apart at all time, 2 club lengths if you have not gone metric yet.

– DON’T go onto the 1st tee until it is your time to play, ensuring 10-minute gaps between groups.

– DON’T play in groups of more than two, do not makeup groups on the course.

+ DO be respectful of the condition of the course – the limited greenkeeping staff have been under tremendous strain during the lockdown period

– DON’T touch anything other than your own equipment if you can..

Remember – we all play by a set of rules. Stick to the additional rules and hopefully, they will only be temporary

+ DO play safe, stay safe and enjoy your golf once again

Looking ahead

We’ve added a new feature to our weekly emails called ‘Thoughts for the course’. Each week there’ll be a handy tip that will (hopefully) give you something to think about ahead of your next game of golf. Be sure to scroll down a little further to give it a read.

One to one lessons will start from Monday he are the first guide lines to how they will operate

Driving Range Lessons

- Player to arrive at their allotted time.

- Player will be provided with golf balls

- Player to bring own equipment

- Please do not arrive before your allotted time and wait in the car if necessary

- Warm up to be conducted at start of the lesson as part of the session.

- Coach will have sanitized hands in between each lesson

- Player to hit from allotted and marked out two metre radius bay

- Player will be the only person to touch the balls and to manoeuvre the ball into position will be the . player

- Coach will not enter area

- Coach will not handle player’s equipment

- Instruction will be shown visually and verbally

- We kindly ask player to leave when the lesson has finished

Short Game Lessons

- Player to arrive at their allotted time.

- Player will be provided with golf balls.

- Player to bring own equipment

- Please do not arrive before your allotted time and wait in the car if necessary

- Warm up to be conducted at start of the lesson

- Coach will have sanitized hands in between each lesson

- Player to hit from allotted two metre radius bay

- Player to not touch the balls and to manoeuvre the ball into position with club

- Coach will not enter area

- Coach will not handle player’s equipment

- Instruction will be shown visually and verbally

- We kindly ask player to leave when the lesson has finished

- Coach will collect the balls on completion of lesson

On Course Lessons

- Coach to meet player at designated tee time

- Both coach and player to adhere to social distancing guidelines as set out by the club.

Thoughts for the course

When you get to hit your next golf shot, it's highly likely that you'll be battling with a little bit of rust that's set into your game during lockdown. So, to help you out when you do get back out on the fairways, here’s something important you might want to pay particular attention to.

Why is alignment important?

When we talk about alignment, we’re referring to where our clubface, feet, hips and shoulders are all aiming. If these areas are disjointed before we start our swing, hitting a straight shot is quite a bit harder.

For example, if a right-hander’s body is aiming left of the target with the clubface straight (as in the image above), it encourages a swing path to the left and will often result in a fade/slice that ends up to the right of where you want it to.

How to perfect yours

Playing lots of golf is something we all look forward to in the coming months, so make sure you have solid foundations at address.

If you ever see professional golfers on the range, they usually lay a stick or club down on the floor between their feet and the ball that aims at their target. By using this as a reference point, it ensures their alignment is spot-on. Try it the next time you practice - you might be surprised!

Visual aids are key

Carrying on with the theme of alignment, it’s really important to get it right when putting too. Golf brands have come up with some clever ways to help golfers on this front, from the original 2-ball putter to today’s intuitive colour-contrast sightlines, but there are also some things you can do on your golf ball to help.

Grab a marker

Lots of golfers draw a line on their golf ball with a permanent marker to use when putting (and driving in some cases).

This has been a popular method for decades as it aids alignment with where the golfer intends to start the ball rolling, taking into account the slope of the green.

Instant feedback

If the line rolls over itself and stays pointing at your target for the duration of the putt, it indicates you've hit a pretty good putt.

However, if the line ends up rolling towards the hole pointing elsewhere, it usually means your stroke was a little off - something we can help with.
