To keep your spirits up this week I enclose some pictures from around the course this week. Plus two of a surprise visitor.

There are plenty of ideas in this week’s email for you to give a go at home, including one that we’d like you to send me a video of you trying. Keep reading to find out what!

Golf's rivalries
 

Golf's greatest rivalries - Woods vs Mickelson

For those that go on stats, this barely constitutes a rivalry. However, when you consider they achieved their feats over the same period, then what both men have managed is mightily impressive.

Tiger was the face of the game for almost two decades. He’s won 15 majors, racked up 109 worldwide professional victories, and even had the main golf video game named after him for several years. In that same time, Phil played second fiddle. A role that saw ‘lefty’ accumulate five major titles, 51 worldwide professional wins and represent the USA in 12 consecutive Ryder Cups. Sadly for Mickelson, he never reached the summit of the World Golf Rankings, albeit spending 26 consecutive years inside the Top 50.

It’s scary to think what more either man could have achieved without the other standing in their way. Let us know which rivalry stands out for you the most and why by getting in touch here.

 
Club news

Course update

Firstly a big thank you to the course staff who are on course each day cutting and supplying some of these pictures.

This week the course is dry following the little rain that came on Saturday. The watering system is in full use as there is no rain forecast during the coming week.

Colour is all around the course with blossom and leaves return to the tress. Essential maintenance and watering continue with limited staff on site.

Lockdown affected some of the winter work programme on the course. Many of you will have seen the tree surgeons on the course helping maintain the clubs commitment to the forestry around the course. With the lockdown in place the work is suspended. In the meantime if your shot is unplayable because of a cut tree it will be a free drop under rule 16.

Purpose: Rule 16 covers when and how the player may take free relief by playing a ball from a different place, such as when there is interference by an abnormal course condition or a dangerous animal condition.

These conditions are not treated as part of the challenge of playing the course, and free relief is generally allowed except in a penalty area.

The player normally takes relief by dropping a ball in a relief area based on the nearest point of complete relief.

This Rule also covers free relief when a player’s ball is embedded in its own pitch mark in the general area.

The reservoir is full and the course sprinklers are now in full use

We had a good drop of rain on Saturday. Prior to that the course was quite dry and showing signs of drought in a few places. The forecast for the next 10 days is to remain dry so the focus is to manage soil moisture.

When we return the 18th Hole will prove a tougher challenge for many of us. The new bunkers will be in play and a strategy of lay up or go for it will be in every golfers mind.

Weekly challenge

We want to get as many Northamptonshire County Golf Club golfers attempting this week’s challenge as possible! It’s a pretty straightforward one so give it a go and let us know how you get on. Who will be the champion?

Keepy Ups - How many can you do?

What to do

Grab your wedge and a golf ball. Head to the garden or give yourself some space inside the house. Now, try to do as many keepy-ups as possible without the ball touching the ground.

Sounds easy, right? 

Get adventurous

If you’re a bit of a show-off, try hitting the ball off your thigh or stopping the ball on your clubface before starting again. You can do this with tennis balls too, or even toilet rolls (apparently).

Golf at home

If any of you are missing golf as much as we are, you’ll be straight onto the course as soon as it’s safe to do so. Well, until that time comes, here’s a little drill for you to try that’ll keep those competitive juices flowing.

Putting drill - try this at home!

The set-up

We’ve used a mug as our makeshift hole, but feel free to use whatever you have lying about the house!

Set your balls down in a straight line from the hole, at one-foot intervals from each other. Starting with the closest, hole each putt without missing. If you miss, go back to the start and try again!

Too easy?

The simplest way to make this drill harder is to increase the distance between each of the balls in your line.

If you’re simply too good and are putting like Tiger, you could try finding a sloping putt or make the target (your makeshift hole) smaller.
