CURRENT DIFFICULTIES WITH THE PUTTING SURFACES

We are sure that members have noticed the difficulties we have recently encountered on our greens. The problem is Anthracnose and there is detailed information about the disease below the picture. We have already treated the greens and are seeing improvements except in the 2 worst greens at the 2nd and 4th - these have received further treatment.

The disease is basically caused by stress and as we have encountered many extremes of water, drought, heat and cold and together with constant short cutting and not allowing any respite from any of these conditions it makes the greens more susceptible to attack by disease. We will of course closely monitor the situation and take whatever action is required and expect to see a speedy recovery but this will not be an overnight improvement.

Anthracnose diseases are common and destructive problems in golf course putting greens. Anthracnose may develop as a foliar blight, in which the turfgrass leaves are infected, or a basal rot, which attacks the leaf sheaths, crowns, and stolons of the plant. Anthracnose symptoms are highly variable, appearing yellow to orange in colour and in an irregular pattern, in small freckle-like spots, or in circular patches up to 1' in diameter.

Symptoms are typically most severe in areas that are stressed from low mowing, excessive traffic and extreme conditions etc. On individual plants, symptoms first appear on the oldest leaves, which die back from the tip, and gradually progress to the younger leaves. Symptoms of anthracnose foliar blight will initially be limited to the leaves, with the crowns, leaf sheaths and stolons healthy.

The Senior's have played 2 matches since our last report

Stratford away

This return match was halved overall so County retained the Putter that is played for each year. The score on the day was 3all and the seasonal gross 9 to 3. Captain John Roberts rallied his troops well it seems and it actually looked very very good when the first three matches went our way.

Sadly it could not be sustained and the remaining matches were all lost. No doubt this will give the selectors food for thought when they next meet!!! John Roberts and Rob Spokes won 3/2, Ray Kingston and John Clark won 4/2 and Peter Darby and John Draper won 3/2. Dennis Sleath and Ian Kennedy lost 2/1, with Gordon Seal and Herbie Gowan losing 5/4 and Frank Fitzpatrick and Alan Boyce lost 4/3.

Longcliffe Home

Having lost at Longcliffe earlier in the season,a result which in the view of Captain Roger Street is too prevalent at that venue, the team rallied to win 6 matches to 2, giving us an overall result for the season of 9.5 matches to 6.5. By the end of the day the captain was smiling again!

Roger Street and Terry Butcher won 4/3
Dennis Walker and David Adams won 1up
Richard Halliday and Malcolm Pounds won 1 up
Herbie Gowan and Alan Boyce halved
Nick Godden and David Whalley lost 2/1
Ray Kingston and Rob Spokes won 3/2
Paul Osborne and Peter Darby won 4/2
Steve Battison and Frank Ainger halved

Sheets are up up for the October matches against Northampton and Staverton so get your name down ASAP.

The teams have been notified for the remaining Sept fixtures so please confirm your availability in good time. It will be noted there is a new captain in there, despite that withdrawals are not anticipated!

PING G30

It's not just tour players likeBubba Watson who are getting the most out PING's new G30. The latest series of woods from PING are proving to be a big hit with club golfers; the crown turbulators helping to generate faster clubhead speed for longer, more accurate tee shots.

Callaway Big Bertha V Series

The new Big Bertha V Series driver is super lightweight and is designed to help maximize distance for players who are looking for more speed. Far from being aimed at just those with slow swing speeds, it has also proved a big hit on tour.
