Mills Cup

Congratulations to Sue Barrick who shot a nett 71 to retain the Mills Cup for the 2nd consecutive year and to Dawn Mallard-Parker who recorded a fabulous nett 70 to win the Russell Bowl.

Runner-up in the Mills Cup was Alisa Moore - nett 77 (cb) from Madeline Henderson.

Runner-up in the Russell Bowl was Karen Dearing - nett 71.

Seniors news

Seniors Away Day

The seniors, because of a number of clashes with other commitments, have rearranged their away day at Burton on Trent GC.to October 4th.There is an availability sheet posted on the Seniors board giving more detail.

Any and all seniors members over 55 are welcome to join in on the day not just those who participate in Seniors matches.

Match Reports

Two fixtures to report on.

Our annual visit to Ashridge was ruined by torrential rain.

Having elected to proceed despite the conditions the match was abandoned after 9 holes due to a combination of saturated players and flooding greens!

Our match captain Iain Kennedy was able to report that at the time we were losing 6 matches to 1 but the fight back was about to start!

We then hosted our neighbours Northampton GC and very disappointingly we lost the derby 3.5 to 2.5.This is not a fixture we lose in very often.

On Course this week

The Greens staff are making the second pass of overseeding this week. This time it’s fescue. By the time they have finished there will have been 280kgs of fine grass seed added to the greens.

The process of overseeding the now bare patches that suffered during the drought on June and July.

Just 4 weeks to go

The Ryder Cup is edging ever closer, with a lot of speculation over who will be chosen as one of the four wildcards on both sides of the Atlantic.

There is an expectation that USA Team Captain Jim Furyk will give one of those spots to a resurgent Tiger Woods, who can now be picked on form rather than reputation after experiencing a stellar comeback season. Others vying for a trip to Le Golf National in Paris are Zach Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner and Tony Finau, providing Furyk with an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

Thomas Bjorn won’t know exactly who has qualified for his European team until September 2, but the big names – Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm – are dead certs. The bigger question lies in the wildcard picks. Ian Poulter has a fearsome Ryder Cup record, having never lost a singles match, and has played himself into good form this season. Paul Casey, Thomas Pieters, Russell Knox and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are all in contention too, not to mention Ryder Cup veterans Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia.

Setting your sights

How many times do you find yourself lining up your shot and thinking "this is about an 8-iron from here to the pin", only to find that you end up 10-15 yards short of the hole? Being able to utilise accurate yardages is a key step to taking your game to the next level, which is why we'd recommend using a GPS device to ensure you always know exactly how far you have left to the pin.
