CECIL LEITCH NEWS

The Cecil Leitch Team had some very good results in their matches this year and I should like to thank everyone who participated in the competition.

Sadly we did not manage to get through to the final stages and once again the holders Whittlebury Park won our Section.

The final will be played at NCGC on Tuesday 9th September and this will be between Staverton Park and Whittlebury Park.

Our own Alison Shine, the County Cecil Leitch Organiser will be retiring in November after six years service, and we thank her for all her hard work.

Annual Family fun day- Sunday 24th August

Sunday morning on the dot of 11.00, the brown tee at Hole 1 saw the first two of the 9 hole juniors teeing off at the start of their Family Foursomes Stableford Competition. This was a fun but very competitive competition - no putts were to be given and the all male configurations played off the men's card while the all female and the mixed used the ladies' card. The 28 players and their families who joined them afterwards were rewarded with a tasty BBQ organised by Peter and Penny Walsh, after which the prizegiving, by the Ladies' Captain Di Murkin, was held.

IN FIRST PLACE WITH 25 POINTS: Natasha and Tom Starcevic

IN SECOND PLACE WITH 20 POINTS ON COUNTBACK: Finn and Martin Hamill

IN THIRD PLACE WITH 20 POINTS: Toby and Chris May

Our thanks to Mark Norton, David Goodrham and Nicola Hoffman who organised the event.

Normally, the 18 hole competition for the Auchterlonie Putter is held on this occasion but this had to be postponed due to conflicting events and will be rescheduled later in the year. There was no Colt Course competition this year as all the candidates have now progressed so well they are playing 9 holes.

A few of the greens have been tined in the past week. This has been done out of necessity to ensure the best putting surfaces throughout the year. This process allows more Oxygen to the roots encouraging better growth. With the predicted heavy rains of Bank Holiday Monday it was an opportune time to get the work in ahead of The Colin Green Trophy.

After the disappointment of a week earlier where two defeats were suffered the Seniors bounced back with two very good performances, winning at both Frilford and Tadmarten. The latter being a home match.

The result against Frilford was especially satisfying as it saw the team recover from being 4matches to 3 down from the initial match earlier in the year to win 7.5 to 6.5 on aggregate and retain the Brampton Buck trophy.Winning 4.5 to 2.5 on the day.

Interestingly the overall aggregate score in the matches where the Buck trophy has been played for is 16 to 9 to us which is the identical position in the matches with Woburn which was reported on last week. The 25 years of matches make interesting reading on the beautifully carved trophies

The Tadmarten match saw us winning by 5.5 to 2.5 and that added to our well earned half back in May sees us with the upper hand this season. The results of the individual matches were:

Frilford
Dennis Walker and Alan Boyce won 1 up
Dennis Sleath and Syeve Battison won 3 and 1
David Alston and Paul Phillips lost 3and 2
Nick Godden and Paul Osborne won 4 and 2
Roger Brady and David Adams won 4 and 2
Nigel Kay and Peter Darby halved Bob
Andrews and Tony Bishop lost 4and 3

Tadmarten
Frank Ainger and Nick Godden lost 5 and 4
Ray Kingston and John Draper won 2 up
Ian Kennedy and Peter Cooch won 3and 2
Terry Butcher and Alan Boyce lost 5and 4
Peter Bedwell and Neil Hufton won 4and 2
Nigel Kay and Steve Battison won 7 and 6
David Alston and Herbie Gowan halved
John Roberts and Ross Greenhill won 4 and 2

Srixon Z-Star golf balls

Excess backspin robs your drives of distance. To lower your spin-rate, tee the ball higher. It promotes a level-to-up attack that brings your rpm down. But also choose a smart ball like Srixon’s Z-Star; its clever variable-firmness core mutes driver backspin, helping your drives soar.
