Paul was the leading amateur at the 1988 Open Championship. Paul's highest finish on the Order of Merit is ninth in 1996. He suffered a serious injury to his right hand during the second round of the 2000 Dubai Desert Classic, and was unable to compete for the remainder of that season. He also struggled in 2001 and 2002, but improved to 89th in the Order of Merit in 2003, thus regaining full exempt status. In 2005, he picked up his fifth European Tour win, and his first for a decade, at the Portuguese Open and in 2006 he made a successful defence of his title.
To date he has played in over 600 events worldwide with 6 European Tour victories to his name having being the winner of the; Cannes Open, European Pro- Celebrity Classic, Benson + Hedges, French Open and twice winner of the Portuguese Open in both 2005 & 2006. In 2007 Paul achieved his highest ever World Ranking as he was considered to be the 47th best golfer in the World.
His achievements in the Open are considerable too, having played in 14 championships and being the owner of the course record at the legendary St. Andrews when in 1990 he shot an incredible 63. He also won the Silver Medal for the leading amateur in 1988 where he enjoyed one of his personal career highlights when he played with Jack Nicklaus in the final round.

Seniors played two matches this past week unfortunately both were lost. We obviously need to up our game! Firstly we lost at Woburn in this seasons return match Woburn prevailing 5.5 to 1.5.
The game was closer than the score suggests as each match reached at least the 17th hole. Richard Halliday and Ian Kennedy getting our only win on the 18th.
The loss meant that Woburn won the Brampton Buck this year with an aggregate score of 8 to 6
This Brampton Buck is one of 3 we play for annually the others being against Frilford Heath and Luffenham Heath. We held all three from last seasons matches a concerted effort is required to keep the other 2 in September when the other 2 two fixtures are completed.
The overall record in the Woburn match which has been played for 25 years now is 16 to 9 in our favour. Woburn were reminded of that midst their celebrations!!
As is usual the Woburn Dukes course was in fine fettle and we were treated royally by the caterers.
The results were
Dennis Walker and Steve Battison lost 1 down
Richard Halliday and Ian Kennedy won 1 up
William Wells and Frank Ainger lost 2 and 1
Ray Kingston and David Alston lost 2and 1
Ronnie Steedman and Paul Phillips lost 2and 1
Frank Fitzpatrick and David Adams lost 2and 1
Roger Street and Gordon Seal halved
Later in the week we visited Burford for our first ever visit for a seniors fixture. This time we lost 3.5 to 2.5 with the matches not being so close There were either big wins or big losses as can be seen below. Nick, Gordon, Roger and Neil showing the way and how it should be done for the rest who sadly failed it seems.
Nick and Gordon literally saw off one of their opponents who had to leave the course Ill during the round!Nick assures us they were 5 up at the time so the results was unaffected. I am sure we can believe him!! Everything about the visit to Burford was great and we should be pleased to have this fixture in our locker for future years. The greens like those at Woburn were particularly good.Perhaps that is our excuse for 2losses,greens with speed we have rarely been exposed to this season.
The results were;
Roger Street and Peter Darby lost 6and 5
Roger Brady and Neil Hufton won 5 and 3
Nick Godden and Gordon Seal won 6and 5
Ray Kingston and David Adams Halved
John Draper and Herbie Gowen lost 4and 3
Ross Greenhill and Steve Battison lost 6 and 5
The September fixtures are now posted on the notice board and you should get your names down if you are available.
