Club Championship
Congratulations to Club Champion Ben Jones, whose winning score was 149. We heard plenty of reports of lost balls not only from the tee but from 2nd shots, showing how tough the course was playing. Ben’s strategy of hitting 3 wood off most tees played a large part in his victory, he hit driver only once on the 11th in the morning and this found trouble, he learnt his lesson quickly!
The first round of the Northamptonshire County Golf Club, Club Championship on Saturday turned out to be much tougher than the conditions seemed to be. The morning round was a non-qualifier with reductions only but this did not stop Ben Jones the eventual winner. His morning round of 74 was three shots ahead of his nearest rival and good enough to see his handicap cut to scratch for the first time. Ben’s afternoon round was only one shot more and he finished on 149 to become Club Champion 3 shots clear of Charlie Salter in second and four ahead of Tony Lord in third. Quite an achievement for Ben to finish well ahead of a strong field and to get down to scratch with the course at is toughest.
As part of the Club Championship, all the players are fighting to also try and win the George Mobbs Trophy for the best handicap score for the whole day. The winner this year continued with the advance of the youth of the Club with Charlie Salter winning the trophy this year with a net score of 146 – being one of the leaders in the net prize in the morning following a 74 Charlie did really well and improved in the afternoon with a net 72 to secure the George Mobbs Trophy.
