Midland Closed Championship 2014
Northamptonshire County Golf Club was well represented at this year’s Midland Closed Championship with 1st and 3rd place finished at Kedleston Park on Saturday.
Poor weather conditions resulted in the 36 hole event being stopped after 18 holes which was good news for halfway leader and member Michele Forgione who was named winner after his 1 under 71.
Elsewhere a solid 74 from Sam Henfrey was good enough for a tied 3rd finish and a 76 from Ben Jones meant there was 3 Club Members in the top 10.
Seniors Duff up Woburn
The senior team played their 3 rd Match of an undefeated season at home against Woburn last week. It was a windy day but with home knowledge NCGC won 6-1.
The Ladies Cecil Leitch team had their second match last week when they had a great win against Rushden at Home.
The team won 5 games to 2. There were some extremely good matches with one being won on the 21st hole and the losing matches going to the 19th.
The match venue had to be reversed owing to the poor condition of Rushden’s new greens, but hopefully we shall go there on the 7th July.
County Ladies Scratch League
The first of the round-robin scratch league matches was held at Whittlebury Park G.C. Sunday, 4th May. N.C.G.C. drawn to play Wellingborough G.C., the holders and would dearly like a win.
Sadly, although all the matches were very close, Wellingborough G.C. won by 2 matches to 1.
Rachel Smith started things off very well with a win over Carol Gibbs. Carol said she had not lost a scratch match for years so this was a great effort by Rachel.
Gillian Curley found herself 3 down with 3 to play and battled back valiantly against County Vice Captain Mary Maclaren to win the last 3 holes and headed off for the tricky 19th. Sadly her drive found a poor lie and the end was nigh.
Charlotte Taylor had not played the course before and found herself in unexpected places and up against Gill Snelson who holed putts from everywhere, including the last for a birdie and Charlotte lost 2 down.
In the other match, Northampton G.C. beat Kingsthorpe G.C. by 2 matches to 1.
The next matches are to be held on 15th June at Wellingborough G.C. NCGC are playing Northampton G.C. All support welcome.
Sue Aitken- Scratch League Captain
Woburn Match
Due to the away match at Woburn on Sunday the junior Stableford has been moved to Sunday 25th May
The match result was a draw at 2-2. Rhys Taylor and Hatty Bilson winning 2 & 1, George and Taylor Morgan losing 4 & 3, Micheal and Josh winning 2 & 1, Max Faulkner and Steve Fields losing 1down. The course was playing soft and long due to the heavy weekend rain.
There is a big difference between the tees at the 7th The tee of the day will influence where you play your approach shot to the green from .
The new back tee added on top of the reservoir embankment, has made it one of the most memorable and daunting tee shots on the course . In 1947 James Braid positioned Braids bunker to the right side of this heavily bunkered hole, the new tee brings this bunker into play even for the longest of hitters. The well bunkered green also slopes dramatically from left to right meaning that the line of the approach is as important as the length. One thing for sure you are unlikely to be playing from a flat lie in this approach, so confidence in your irons is a must.
If you are Playing off a sloping lie with an ill fitting set of irons or the wrong angle between shaft and head this shot is frightening difficult. Have your irons custom fitted and the shot will still be difficult but a lot less frightening as your iron shots will be more predictable and your confidence higher.

As qualified Professionals we don’t need electronic equipment to fit player with golf clubs. We are trained in ball flight recognition and understand feel better than any computer. Lie angle, length of shaft and grip size are all part of what we do daily.
We have electronic equipment to measure swing speed, distance, tempo, shaft flex, kick angle & release factor. Still the most important thing for us is how they feel in your hands and how they perform (which means seeing the ball fly). As your coaches we can fit irons to your swing. During this month custom fitting is FREE from any of the three of us.
Mizuno is just one of the club makes who offer custom made clubs. You may have seen our Mizuno fitting cart in the shop it offers us a wide selection of shafts heads and grips to help you find the best feel and performance.
