Spring Meeting
Matthew Myers did the double for both the Wallis Cup and the Spring Vase on Saturday with a tremendous aggregate score of 139. The rough was as penal as ever for the first major of the season and the tees as far back as they go it was a tough day for most. Matthew kept the mistakes to a minimum with only 4 bogeys for the whole day and only 1 on his second 18. Tying 2nd place on 152 in the gross section was last year’s champion Jack Brown and Michael Farr.

The Ladies Cecil Leitch team had their second match last week when they had a great win against Rushden at Home.
The team won 5 games to 2. There were some extremely good matches with one being won on the 21st hole and the losing matches going to the 19th.
The match venue had to be reversed owing to the poor condition of Rushden’s new greens, but hopefully we shall go there on the 7th July.

The 4th Hole will now become a talking point as some members struggle to stop the ball on the green.
In my opinion players often get too close to the green to control the ball. A well positioned tee shot to leave you with a second shot you can hit with spin and lift is the best way to hold the green. Distance is not everything from this tee.
You should rarely take more than three shots to get down from 110 yards or less and should be expecting to get down in 2.
While suspect putting may account for some of these shots on this green more often the damage occurs - when you have a WEDGE or short iron in your hand. With these clubs you face the challenge of half and three-quarter swings, ‘knock-downs’, ‘flops’, ‘lobs’, ‘drop and stops’, ‘bump and runs’ and ‘splashes if you brought the bunkers into play’. Add to this the challenge of an uneven or a tight lie on the fairway and it becomes a real point of frustration; because you KNOW that you SHOULD be hitting the green.
My suggestion 'position your tee shot right side of the fairway, from here the green sits up more towards you and you have the full length of the green to work with. Then leave yourself your favourite wedge distance, a distance were you can hit a shot with height and spin. Distance measuring devices should help you, if not simple maths ,if your best distance is 80 yards out take 80 off the tee of the day and that’s the distance your tee shot should finish.'
If this is where most of your shots are lost, then ask yourself the following questions:
a. Do you have a solid technique?
b. Do you practice your shots from 110 yards in?
c. Do you have a spaced set of Wedges to go with your short Irons?
d. Have you put equipment in your bag that makes the game a little easier?
After your next round think back to each shot you played from 110 yards or less and count how many times it took you more than 3 shots to get down from that distance. With the right equipment – in the form of a properly fitted Wedges – and some instruction, could the 4th hole play a little easier.

‘Need’ for a straighter, more consistent, longer iron shot.
As qualified Professionals we don’t need electronic equipment to fit player with irons . We are trained in ball flight recognition and understand feel better than any computer. Lie angle, length of shaft, swing weight and grip size are all part of what we do daily. Still the most important thing for us is how they feel in your hands and how they perform (which means seeing the ball fly). We can custom fit on the range using real golf balls and showing you the results.
