Men's Handicap League
Our team played their first match away at Staverton last week and started with a win! Congratulations to all involved.
The Seniors played there first match of the season on Monday, 11 April away to Kettering GC and came away with a good result in winning by 5 matches to 3.
Having suffered with a lot of water recently, the Kettering ground staff did a great job in getting the course set up to play. In very difficult conditions, with the greens only just being hollow tined and dressed, everyone equipped themselves very well with 5 of the matches going to the last hole.
The hospitality from the Kettering team was first class, and together with the excellent food served by their staff made for a most enjoyable day.
The next Seniors match is away to Luffenham Heath GC on Monday, 18 April 2016.

STRI Ecology
Bob Taylor from the STRI returned to the Club on Tuesday. It had been 3 years since Bob visited the Club and his last course walk. STRI do not just help the club with Fairways and greens throughout the year they also help the club with the original Environment Management Plan. Bob was available to the members on the afternoon for a course walk and to explain the extensive management of the gorse around the course. Bob also gave an evening presentation to the members in the club house explaining the number of projects to remove the scrub and trees around the course. Heather was a big topic and how it had disappeared from the course since the 1970s.
If you have ventured down to 9A green this week you will see it covered in black spots. This is where I have spot treated the Silver Thread Moss with a high application of iron in order to kill it. Silver thread is very invasive and doesn't die back in the summer like the other forms of moss we have had on the greens. The only solution is to kill it by using a chemical, which can be only 50% effective or to spot treat as I have done on 9A.
Depending upon the results and how long the spots last, there are 5 greens or so on the main course that also have this problem although it is not as wide spread, however, the appearance of the spots may not be acceptable.
Other Course news
The stump grinder was in action last week, some of the clearing up will continue this week.
The first signs of new growth on the Gorse.
