Juniors 9 hole Stableford, 29 November
Eight nine-hole juniors were able to play last Sunday and, in spite of the wind, there were some good scores and it didn't rain on us either! Sincere thanks to Kate, Martin and Dan who walked round with you and to Dorian who played with Ruben so that they could make their lunch appointment as well as enjoying nine holes of golf.
Jack Wilson and Benjamin Bailey, Benjamin playing in his first competition, had 21 Stableford points. Jack's handicap has now been reduced from 53 to 50, whilst and Benjamin's new handicap is 51. Natasha Starcevic also received a handicap reduction to 44 and has now progressed to the Ladies tees. Also played, Kai Whitson, Ruben Sanchez, Harrison Taylor, William Amos and Hannah Cotton.
This was our last 2015 competition and I wish you all a very happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you in 2016. The 2016 dates will be available soon and I will circulate them to you early next year but keep Sunday 31 January free for Junior Captain's Day with a Texas Scramble with Dads, Mums, Grans, Grandads, uncles, aunts etc and meal afterwards.
Best wishes, Marion
The greens have been pencil tined this week to help the ongoing aeration programme
Bunkers
Due to the ongoing bunker development project, a number of bunkers on the course are ground under repair, from which play is prohibited. If a player's ball lies in the area, or if it interferes with the player's stance or the area of his intended swing, the player must take relief under Rule 25-1: (i) Through the green:
If the ball lies through the green, the player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief must not be in the hazard or on the putting green. When the ball is dropped within one club length of the nearest point of relief, the ball must first strike a part of the course at a spot that avoids interference by the condition and is not in a hazard and not on the putting green.
Metal Spikes
Our club recommends metal spikes for winter. Becoming less and less common, the metal spike is a still used by many tour pros. Metal spikes have longer sharper spikes that give more traction on the course than plastic. However, metal spikes are infamous for tearing up greens in the summer.
Under the rules of golf, players cannot repair spike marks on greens, so plastic spikes have become the common choice for club players during the summer. The plastics spike / cleat leaves a small less obvious indentation on the firmer summer greens but a more obvious one on the softer winter course.
Our research shows that a soft spikes as they are commonly known pick up more debris in winter affecting grip and creating a large indentations in the green. While the metal spike puts small holes in the course they help aeration and for the greens staff less compaction. Northamptonshire County Golf Club request that players wear metal spikes during the softer winter conditions.
Our new Captains will drive in on 13th December.
